‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Season 2 Ending Explained

The final episode of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Season 2 has arrived. Today we will explain the biggest shake up in the series’ history.

‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Season 2 Ending Explained

Things will never be the same for The Man Without Fear. The penultimate episode saw Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) shocking the courtroom as the surprise attorney to Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), after being presumed missing for half a year. This move put him right into the crosshairs of Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) and the AVTF, who made their move almost immediately. In the parking garage of the courthouse, Matt, Kirsten (Nikki M. James), and his entourage were ambushed, resulting in Matt getting shot through the leg.

Karen, back in holding for her trial, gets a psychological evaluation from Heather Glenn (Margarita Levieva) which turns violent. The final scene of the episode sees Matt praying in church, still suffering from his gunshot wound and we see a familiar pair of boots walk in. Meanwhile, Daniel Blake (Michael Gandolfini) meets his noble end after refusing to deliver BB Urich (Genneya Walton) to Buck (Arty Froushan).

The final episode starts off with a vision Karen is having about her and Matt at Panna II, a restaurant frequented by the pair in previous seasons. She is snapped back to reality by the loud gavel of the judge. Matt, in classic Murdock fashion, is late to the trial. Unfortunately, he has a decent excuse as he is busy getting his wound tended to by Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), who returns to the city to help Matt kick Kingpin out of office. An AVTF member serving as a Bullseye imposter is positioned on the roof across from the courthouse, ready to stage an assassination attempt.

Once back in court, Matt makes a risky play by calling Fisk as a witness to testify in Page’s trial. Fisk, wanting to regain power and respect over the city, does indeed show. Meanwhile, the real Benjamin Poindexter (Wilson Bethel) easily dispatches the AVTF and the impersonator, taking over the snipers’ position himself. Matt questions Fisk about the allegations that Daredevil was a terrorist by bringing forth video testimony by the first mate of the Northern Star. But Matt has another avenue to prove Fisk considers Daredevil to not be a legitimate terrorist.

Matt Murdock, in front of a full courtroom and live on television, reveals his trump card. He is the vigilante known as Daredevil.

The judge agrees with Matt that the court isn’t viable to charge Karen Page due to the conflict of interest brought about by the Northern Star sinking and smuggling allegations. On the way out of the courtroom, the governor informs Fisk of the charges brought against him by the attorney general. On the way out of City Hall, Fisk and Matt have a brief conversation. Powell (Hamish Allen-Headley) tells who he assumes to be the AVTF sniper that Matt is in position for them to take the shot. Unlucky for Fisk’s side, Bullseye is up there instead and he promptly shoots Buck Cashman through the abdomen.

The two opposing sides scramble in the chaos, with the Mayor’s people securing themselves in the courtroom and Team Daredevil taking refuge in an office. Fisk addresses the people of New York from the Judge’s bench as BB Urich calls for large groups of protesters sporting Daredevil-themed apparel to take back the city. Jessica gets Matt his Daredevil suit as Cherry, Mahoney (Royce Johnson), and other officers not under Fisk’s control stand at the frontlines of the protest. The AVTF members are dispatched by Fisk to kill both Karen and Matt.

Officer Cole North (Jeremy Isaiah Earl), has a change of heart after White Tiger’s niece Angela (Camila Rodriguez) confronts him for killing her uncle, opting to knock out Officer Powell before he can take a shot at Cherry (Clark Johnson). North takes control over his group of AVTF members and decides to let the protesters into City Hall. The mob takes down task force members and makes their way to the courtroom while Daredevil and Jessica do the same. The Attorney General calls Fisk to make his final offer to drop his charges, he must resign from his position and go into exile out of the state. Kingpin, of course, wants to remain in charge, and will do whatever it takes.

This results in Fisk taking matters into his own hands. He exits the courtroom and confronts the angry rioters, resulting in one of the most brutal scenes in the history of both this show and its previous incarnation. Fisk, in his rage, mows down person after person, breaking backs, smashing faces in, and killing anyone in his path. This all culminates with the Mayor and Daredevil with the protestors both reaching the lobby, and Fisk calls the people of the city ungrateful for him. The mob is still coming, though, and eventually overwhelms the Mayor by piling on top of him and taking their turns beating him.

Matt gets the crowd to get off him and give him space. Fisk knows by now that things are over, and Matt tells him it’s in both of their best interests to leave the city behind and for Fisk to take the Attorney General’s deal. Wilson accepts. We cut to an epilogue which takes place a short time later. Matt and Karen are eating again at Panna II discussing their new existence living a normal life, a conversation that is cut short when red and blue lights flash outside the window.

Matt’s life as Daredevil has finally caught up to him, and he must pay for crimes he committed as the vigilante. We see Jessica back at Alias Investigations with her daughter when none other than Luke Cage (Mike Colter) walks in, informing Jessica that his work overseas is done and that Mr. Charles (Matthew Lillard) has found a replacement. BB Urich joins the New York Bulletin and Mitchell Ellison (Geoffrey Cantor) from the original series gives her a box of her late Uncle Ben’s front page stories. We then see “Mr. Charles” on an airplane, the flight attendant however calls him “Mr. Robertson”, which may just be another fake identity. Sitting next to him is the real Bullseye, Benjamin Poindexter. Dex and Luke Cage both working under this new CIA figure (who was previously seen reporting to Thunderbolts/New Avengers mastermind Val, as played by Julia Louis Dreyfus) seems to indicate that the MCU is moving towards assembling a Dark Avengers team, as both those characters were members at one point.

The final stretch of this montage shows Matt in his new prison life. Former AVTF members like Powell are also imprisoned, setting up what is sure to be an interesting dynamic for the next season. The final shot of the episode and season is Fisk standing alone on the same beach from Vanessa’s visions as she was slowly succumbing to her injuries earlier in the show.
