What Is ‘The Nice Guys’?

The Nice Guys is an action comedy film that stars Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe as a private eye detective and a violent enforcer respectively. The movie follows the pair as unlikely partners as they investigate the disappearance of a girl. However, the film was released in theatres on May 20, 2016 amd was a box office flop — grossing $71 million globally against a $50 million budget. 

Since its release, the film has garnered a cult following of fans who praise the film for its smart comedy and hilarious scenes. Additionally, Russell Crowe posted a photo of himself with Ryan Gosling on X/Twitter last year captioned: “The kids a genius.” The post only bolstered the demands for a sequel to The Nice Guys.

The film was directed by Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) who’s known for his work in the action genre. Black started working in Hollywood as a screenwriter and sold the screenplay for Lethal Weapon at just 23 years old. Furthermore, Black has written Lethal Weapon 2, The Monster Squad and Lethal Weapon 3; and also directed Iron Man 3.

Ryan Gosling Explains Why ‘The Nice Guys’ Won’t Get A Sequel

In an interview with ComicBook.com for The Fall Guy, the upcoming action comedy directed by David Leitch, Gosling spoke on the possibilities of a sequel to The Nice Guys. Stating how The Angry Birds Movie came on top at the box office and ruined the possibility of a sequel.

Gosling said, “So much of a sequel, I think, is decided by the opening weekend of a movie, and we opened up against Angry Birds,” referencing the animated film’s box office run. “So Angry Birds just, just destroyed us. Angry Birds got a sequel.” (The Angry Birds Movie 2 was released in theatres on August 14, 2019).

Both The Nice Guys and The Angry Birds Movie released in theatres on May 20, 2016. However, The Angry Birds Movie opened domestically with $33 million and The Nice Guys opened with $11 million.

The Nice Guys was released in theatres on May 20, 2016. The film was directed by Shane Black and it stars Russell Crowe, Ryan Gosling, Angourie Rice, Matt Bomer, Margaret Qualley, Keith David, and Kim Basinger. Additionally, Ryan Gosling will star next in The Fall Guy which releases in theatres on May 3, 2024.
