Ryan Coogler's 'X-Files' Pilot Is 2 Hours Long, Filmed On 65mm

A new rumour has been circulating online that states Ryan Coogler’s upcoming X-Files revival pilot is over two hours long and was shot on 65mm film by cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw.

The news comes from Jordan Ruimy, editor in chief of World of Reel, who claims that he has been hearing fascinating things from the development process of the upcoming series. He claims that Ryan Coogler, the genius filmmaker behind Academy Awards darlings Black Panther and Sinners, has asked that producing studio Disney to consider turning the pilot into a film, even before the rest of the series gets the greenlight.

This treatment is probably best known in the form of Twin Peaks, another cult classic detective show, which released its feature length pilot at film festivals before it released on ABC back in 1989. Considering Ryan Coogler’s stature as a critically successful filmmaker, the pilot very well could be subject to the same type of release, whether that be festival to wide to streaming or festival to streaming, or even wide to streaming.

The X-Files pilot being shot on 65mm film is very unique for TV series as the only other TV show to do this, was Sam Levinson’s Euphoria Season 3, which was shot on both 65mm and 35mm film. Whilst it is unknown whether this 65mm format will be used across the full season if greenlit, the use of a film format like this serves as a draw itself, following the resurgence of the format and experience at the hands of filmmakers like Christopher Nolan (The Odyssey) and Denis Villeneuve (Dune: Part Three), and even Ryan Coogler, whose run with Sinners advertised film heavily.

X-Files stars Himesh Patel and Danielle Deadwyler, who are supported in the pilot by Amy Madigan (Weapons), Steve Buscemi (Fargo), and Ben Foster (Hell or High Water). The pilot is in post production at Hulu.
