Marvel Studios is reportedly ditching the name Young Avengers in favour of Champions ahead of a new project in development at the studio.
Many fans of Young Avengers centric characters, such as Wiccan, have been long awaiting the introduction of the team in Marvel Studios’ Marvel Cinematic Universe. While it seems they’re close to debuting in live action, it might not be in a traditional sense. A new report from Apocalyptic Horseman suggests that the team will be making their live action debut soon, but as another team titled Champions.
While these are different teams in the comics, Marvel Studios likely will combine the two due to the Young Avengers roster that has currently been developed is too old to be considered young, with Hailee Steinfeld (Kate Bishop) being the same age as Scarlett Johansson was when she starred in The Avengers.
The project will also become a show, despite being previously rumoured as a film. Daniel Richtman (DanielRPK) confirmed these two rumours shortly after on his Patreon, adding that a showrunner is currently being sought out for the series. He also explains that the reason behind the title change is due to the poor financial reception of Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels which teased the Young Avengers in a post credit scene.
The current Champions roster is expected to consist of Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), Wiccan (Joe Locke), Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton) as well as several other members yet to be revealed. The series, if greenlit, will likely be released via Disney+.
Up next from Marvel Studios is the third and final season of What If…?, the first season of Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man, Captain America: Brave New World, and Daredevil: Born Again.
