Several new reports have indicated that the Mike Flanagan Clayface film is moving forward at DC Studios.

First reported on by Deadline back in March 2023, the Mike Flanagan Clayface film development has largely been kept quiet. Despite its technical status as a rumour, James Gunn never debunked the idea lending credence to the likelihood of the film existing. Now we have new updates on the project.

Mike Flanagan Writing ‘Clayface’

In a new report from Daniel Richtman (DanielRPK), Clayface reportedly is being written by writer Mike Flanagan. Disputing this report, Nexus Point News’ Apocalyptic Horseman reports that the script is actually finished, aiming for a Spring 2025 production window and that Flanagan will not serve as a director on the film due to scheduling conflicts with his The Exorcist reboot film. It will also serve as one of DC Studios’ next films following Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and The Batman Part II, predicting a 2027 release date.

While it is not concretely confirmed as a DC Universe canonical project, ApocHorseman believes it is. This comes after Deadline reported that the film was not pitched as part of The Batman Epic Crime Saga.

However, Clayface actually exists in the DC Universe, having appeared in marketing material for Creature Commandos and is expected to have a big role in the series. He will be voiced by Alan Tudyk in the series, but Tudyk is not expected to reprise the role in live action, as the script reportedly revolves around a young Basil Karlo in his early 20s as an actor. It’s possible, if set in the DCU, that the film will serve as a prequel.

Flanagan was seen earlier this year hanging out with the DC Studios team, including the likes of Superman actor David Corenswet, rumoured Booster Gold actor Kumail Nanjiani and co-CEO Peter Safran. Mike Flanagan has also previously expressed interest in a Clayface film, stating:

Well I’ve wanted to do a Superman movie since I was a kid, but I would also be really keen to do a standalone Clayface movie as a horror/thriller/tragedy.
