Queer has gained a lot of traction over the last few months and excitement has been growing in the film world thanks to its evocative storytelling, stellar cast, and Luca Guadagnino‘s distinctive directorial style, as well as the overwhelmingly positive reception as a result of these. Adapted from William S. Burroughs’ semi-autobiographical novella of the same name, Queer delves into themes of longing, alienation, and unrequited love, giving the movie its focal point of deeply introspective reflection and an emotionally raw narrative.
The film stars Daniel Craig (Casino Royale, Knives Out), who takes on the challenging role of Lee, a character whose turbulent emotions and self-discovery anchor the story. Opposite Craig is Drew Starkey (Outer Banks), whose commanding presence as the object of Lee’s obsessive affection provides a magnetic counterbalance.
Starkey’s casting has drawn significant attention, especially from younger audiences who know him as the brooding Rafe Cameron from Outer Banks. His transition to a more mature, emotionally complex role showcases his range as an actor and has brought a fresh wave of interest to the project. The chemistry between Starkey and Craig is electric, allowing the film to explore the power dynamics, vulnerability, and intensity of Lee’s feelings. The supporting cast is rounded out by a mix of talented actors who embody the Bohemian, offbeat atmosphere of 1950s Mexico City, where much of the story takes place.
Queer has gained particular traction on social media, thanks largely to Drew Starkey’s involvement. Starkey’s presence has brought a wave of younger viewers to the film, many of whom are discovering Burroughs’ work and Guadagnino’s oeuvre for the first time. Starkey’s fanbase has embraced his daring choice to take on a role so different from his earlier work, with many praising his decision to dive into a story with complex LGBTQ+ themes.
Fans have taken to platforms like TikTok and Twitter to share their excitement about the film, with some even being a bit too excited and sharing multiple clips from the film that were recorded at early screenings. The blend of an acclaimed auteur like Guadagnino and a rising star like Starkey has created a perfect storm of online buzz, bridging cinephile audiences with a younger, social-media-savvy generation.
Queer resonates because it offers something rare: an unapologetically raw exploration of identity, love, and longing, told through Guadagnino’s distinct lens. Its themes of unfulfilled desire and emotional vulnerability are timeless, yet the film feels fresh and daring, thanks to its nuanced performances and Guadagnino’s ability to push boundaries.
In a landscape where LGBTQ+ stories are still underrepresented, Queer stands out as a brave and emotionally resonant piece of filmmaking that connects with audiences across generations.
What Is The ‘Queer’ Digital Release Date?
According to Maxblizz, among other reporters. Queer will be available to buy or rent on the usual digital HD and 720p platforms, such as Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, Google Play Movies & TV and Vudu from January 17th, 2025.
This is just over a month after the film went nationwide in America and released in some countries internationally, where it was distributed by Mubi. There is no date for streaming on services such as Mubi yet.
Whilst the date may seem early, it is unsurprising as A24 likely aims to release their films on streaming, including The Brutalist, Babygirl and their other award hopefuls in January or very early February in an effort to get people seeing and talking about their movies before the February 18th voting deadline for the Academy Awards. This digital date would give a whole month for the word to be spread and goodwill to be echoed about the film, hopefully encouraging its award chances.
Queer is directed by Luca Guadagnino and stars Daniel Craig, Drew Starkey, Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville, Henry Zaga and Omar Apollo. Luca Guadagnino, Marco Morabito and Zachary Fox serve as producers.
