Festival big hits Queer and The Brutalist have finally been given release dates by A24, both landing at the end of the year exactly as predicted.
Queer will get a limited release on November 27th and The Brutalist will get a limited release on December 20th. With these filling up A24’s plate alongside their other big hitters this year Sing Sing, We Live in Time, A Different Man and Babygirl, they are going to have a difficult time choosing which films to prioritise for the upcoming awards season but also for marketing in general and how much attention each film is going to be given.
When you have this many sure-fire hits on your schedule, it becomes overwhelming and A24 is in the position everyone wants to be in because they simply have too many quality films this year and now they are in the difficult place of choosing which to prioritise.
‘Queer’ Release Date – November 27
Adapted from William S. Burroughs’ novel of the same name by Guadagnino’s Challengers collaborator Justin Kuritzkes, Queer follows William Lee (Daniel Craig) as an American ex-pat in his late forties as he leads a solitary life amidst a small American community. Lee recounts his life in Mexico City among expatriate American students. He pursues a young man named Allerton, a US Navy serviceman recently discharged from Jacksonville, Florida.
With the film being pushed to the end of November, it seems to have been pushed to the side and put near the bottom of A24’s priority list, though this is likely the smartest choice and best option for them. Despite the film being received well, it has not been positioned well to bring in a lot of love during the awards season and is not a favourite to win any awards and barely even bring in any nominations. The only award that it is looking to gain a nomination for is Daniel Craig in Best Actor, which is a worthy award for the film. Despite this, considering it’s only likely to get one nomination, it is unsurprising that A24 have shifted this to the side and chose to focus more on their recent acquired The Brutalist, though a lot of fans will be disappointed by this as it removes any chance of further award potential and if A24 fully shifts focus to The Brutalist from Queer, this could even see it miss out on a Best Actor nomination.
Queer is still looking to be great with a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes from 51 reviews.
Queer is directed by Luca Guadagnino and stars Daniel Craig, Drew Starkey, Lesley Manvill, Jason Schwartzman and Omar Apollo. Lorenzo Mieli is producing.
‘The Brutalist’ Release Date – December 20
The Brutalist follows the journey of Hungarian-born Jewish architect, László Tóth (Oscar winner Adrien Brody), who emigrated to the United States of America in 1947. When visionary architect László Toth and his wife Erzsébet flee Europe to rebuild their legacy and witness the birth of modern America, their lives are changed forever by a mysterious and wealthy client.
After a strong showing at Venice, including receiving the Silver Lion for Best Director, The Brutalist has emerged as an awards frontrunner with odds falling in its favour for almost all major categories from Best Director to Best Actor and even becoming a hot shot for technical categories including Editing and Cinematography. With this press, A24 is sure to give The Brutalist a big push and is likely to even have it as its main film going into the awards season. Despite its lengthy 3 and a half hour runtime, it has received a variety of rave reviews and many praise it as the film of a generation, comparing it to The Godfather – which is sure to get a lot of people excited.
The Brutalist holds an impressive 98% on Rotten Tomatoes with 48 reviews.
The Brutalist is directed by Brady Corbet and stars Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, Joe Alwyn, Raffey Cassidy and Guy Pearce. Nick Gordon, D.J. Gugenheim, Brian Young, Andrew Lauren, Trevor Matthews, Andrew Morrison are producing.
There is a lot to look forward to when it comes to awards season and this year, despite appearing to be a weaker year at first, has proven to be one of the most interesting and the quality of the films is nothing to glance over. With the release of The Brutalist, award predictions have been shaken up and now winners and nominations are being rethought, though it likely isn’t going to change any of the main winners.
