‘Thunderbolts*’ Post-Credits Scenes Explained

With the release of Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* comes yet another set of post-credit scenes, keeping up a long-running Marvel tradition.

This article contains major spoilers for Thunderbolts*.

Thunderbolts* is finally here after three long years of development. Hailing from Jake Schreier of Beef fame, the film follows the uniting of Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) as they’re pitted against each other by CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), who aims to wipe her slate of dirty secrets clean. Soon, they meet the mysterious Bob Reynolds (Lewis Pullman) and must join forces with the Red Guardian (David Harbour) and the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) to fight a deadly new force.

As with every Marvel movie, the credit scenes are an additional experience for movie-going audiences, with the company adding extra nods, teases and easter eggs to attract extra audience interest outside of the main movie.

How Many Post-Credits Scenes Does ‘Thunderbolts*’ Have?

Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* has two post-credit scenes, the first a mid-credit scene and the second following the main credits.

What Happens In The ‘Thunderbolts*’ Post-Credit Scenes?

The first post-credits scene for Thunderbolts* is set after the ending of the film, where the Thunderbolts become The New Avengers under Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s OXE company. The post-credits scene plays off an in-joke of the movie, where Red Guardian is in a shopping aisle, sporting a new moustache. He approaches a woman who is inspecting some cereal. The cereal is Wheaties, which a poster was also made about and was released with the film’s second trailer.

The New Avengers, consisting of Yelena, Bucky, John, Ava, Alexei, and Bob, are collaborating with the cereal brand in a form of cross-promotion, something Alexei was previously dreaming of in an earlier scene. The woman takes the cereal hesitantly and walks off quickly, putting it back down, eager to get away from the strange Russian hero. The scene ends with him calling out, “That’s me on the box!”

The second credits scene picks up 14 months after the end of the film. It sees our New Avengers team in Avengers Tower (previously Stark Tower and Sentry’s Watchtower) contemplating a new potential threat. John is wearing a beret, Bob is reading in a corner, Ava is sporting shoulder-length hair, Yelena’s hair is grown out, and Bucky has a new suit. Yelena says they are the Avengers, per the government’s appointment. This is similar to how The Avengers were formed back in 2012’s The Avengers, with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) acting on behalf of SHIELD to form the group. It is revealed that Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) is not happy with the founding of the New Avengers. John points out that the internet isn’t happy with them being The Avengers, making “very nasty memes” about them. Bucky reveals he spoke with Sam, but their conversation went poorly. Yelena stresses that Sam has filed a copyright infringement against The New Avengers for using the brand and mentions that there is a huge space crisis before running a threat analysis on it.

Alexei enters the room, wearing a jumpsuit, and hilariously proposes that they can avoid the copyright notice by naming themselves the New Avengerz and says he has jumpsuits for everyone. As he explains his plan, an alarm sounds, revealing an unidentified spacecraft that has entered the orbit of the Earth. Bucky suggests bringing up a satellite image of it, and they soon lay their eyes on it.

But before that happens, Yelena tells their AI to fire up the quinjets, but Alexei says they wouldn’t need to fire up the jets if Sentry could fly them there. Bob, however, cannot fly, as he cannot be Sentry without risking setting The Void loose again.

The unidentified spacecraft that is entering the orbit is revealed to be “extradimensional”, showing us a video feed of an almost conical-shaped ship flying towards Earth. It spins slightly and a blue streak and blue four are revealed, teasing the Fantastic Four. It being extradimensional leads us to infer this is the same Fantastic Four from Matt Shakman’s upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps, where Reed Richards is played by Pedro Pascal, Sue Storm by Vanessa Kirby, Johnny Storm by Joseph Quinn, and Ben Grimm by Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
