Ted Sarandos Says ‘Mindhunter’ Season 3 Cancellation Was On David Fincher

Ted Sarandos, the well known anti-theatrical format CEO of Netflix revealed earlier this month that the cancellation of Mindhunter following its second season was a result of David Fincher becoming busy with other projects, rather than budgetary cost rumours, which was previously reported by cast and crew members alike.

Speaking at an event moderated by The Indian Express, Sarandos commented on why it was cancelled, stating he would have loved to see a third season come to fruition.

“We always anticipated there would be a third season, and he got very busy making a film, and David [Fincher] is an unbelievably meticulous creator, so he couldn’t just do two things at the same time, and he certainly didn’t want to shortchange either one. So it got pushed off and pushed off and, I would’ve loved to have seen a third season of Mindhunter.”

Fincher remains in a long-standing relationship of the company and currently sits in a four year deal with the studio, creating seasons of Love, Death & Robots as well as the upcoming The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth. Since Mindhunter Season 2, Fincher has also directed Mank and The Killer for the streamer.

Mindhunter tells the semi-true story of FBI agents who in the 1970s define what it means to be a serial killer, interviewing and classifying sociopaths and infamous murderers, including the likes of Charles Manson, The Co-Ed Killer, and the BTK Killer. The series starred Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany, the latter of which recently revealed Fincher is considering returning the series but as a trilogy of two-hour films.

Funnily enough, Monster Season 3, which told the story of Ed Gein, also featured an adaptation of the same story Mindhunter adapts, with those agents (recast) interviewing Gein (Charlie Hunnam). It could be that Netflix were testing the waters to bring the series back for a third season now that Fincher has an exclusivity deal with the streamer.
