Brad Pitt Re-Teams With Edward Berger For ‘World War Z’ Sequel
Brad Pitt and Edward Berger have signed on to create World War Z 2, 13 years after Marc Forster’s original film.
After a decade of sequel discussions and false starts, World War Z 2 is officially a go at Paramount with Brad Pitt signed to return, and Edward Berger set to direct.
The first film followed Pitt as Gerry Kane, a UN Investigator whose life is upended when the zombie apocalypse arrives, forcing him to protect his family at all costs. The film was a smash hit back when it released in 2013 and grossed upwards of $500M at the worldwide box office.
World War Z left off with with Gerry realizing that the zombies ignore sick people, and injects himself with a pathogen to safely pass zombies and reunite with his family. They travel to a secure area in Nova Scotia where a vaccine is created as the military continues combatting zombies.
The upcoming film will be produced by Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, on behalf of Plan B Entertainment, and Berger will executive produce. Dennis Kelly, a relatively inexperienced feature writer, will pen the film.
This won’t be the first time Brad Pitt and Edward Berger worked together. They’ve previously worked with each other on The Riders, an upcoming film at A24 that was also produced by Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment.
It is unclear whether any of the other supporting cast will return for the film, especially Matthew Fox, who was initially envisioned as the villain of the first film before his role was cut.
It’s the latest film to be picked up by Paramount Pictures, following their in-the-works acquisition of Warner Bros. Pictures, and their promise of 30 films a year. Between this, Days of Thunder 2, Top Gun 3, The Adventures of Tintin 2, and others, its clear CEO David Ellison is aiming to capitalize on IP to reach this goal.
