‘Top Gun 3’ In Development At Paramount Pictures, Tom Cruise To Return
Top Gun 3 is officially in development at Paramount Pictures, with Tom Cruise set to return as Maverick.
Paramount feels the need again, with development on Top Gun 3 officially underway at the Skydance owned studio. The news was revealed at CinemaCon this week during the Paramount Pictures presentation in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The move was an inevitable one, with Top Gun: Maverick (the second film in the now franchise) being released to rave reviews and huge box office, with legendary director Steven Spielberg touting the film as the saviour as cinema, in a time where the COVID-19 pandemic had the industry on its knees.
That film followed Maverick, played again by Tom Cruise, as he returns to Top Gun to train the next generation of combat aviators in aerial maneuvers. The film handled themes such as legacy, generational trauma, and more, and went on to be nominated for Best Picture at the 2023 Academy Awards.

Both films thus far in the series have had stellar casts, with the first having Cruise, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, Tim Robbins, Tom Skerritt, Kelly McGillis, and Meg Ryan. Though many didn’t return for the sequel, Top Gun: Maverick added Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Monica Barbaro, Jennifer Connelly, and Jon Hamm to the mix. The third film, which is currently in the script stage, will surely add more, as well as further exploring the relationship between Maverick and Teller’s Rooster.
Jerry Bruckheimer will return to produce. He is currently working on other films such as a sequel to 2025’s F1: The Movie, starring Brad Pitt and Damson Idris, and Tom Cruise starrer Days of Thunder 2 (where rumours of the two films being merged into one have been floated around recently).
Ehren Kruger is currently writing the film but the film is yet to receive a director.
