‘The Odyssey’ First Reactions Highlight The Film’s Epic Scale, Set Pieces and Performances.
Here are the initial reactions to Chrisopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.
Christopher Nolan’s much awaited The Odyssey is out in a couple of weeks, and we now have the first official social media reactions from those who have seen it, mostly critics, junket reporters, and those who attended the premiere in London earlier today.
The premiere for the film is currently being held in London’s Leicester Square Odeon where the film was presented by Nolan and the cast. The movie is set to release worldwide on July 17th and the first social media reactions are now out. The review embargo reportedly won’t life until July 15th, about a day before the movie will be seen by audiences.
There was a lot made on who will and won’t see The Odyssey early, as there were reports by Universal claiming that the film would skip social media influencer screenings and that critics will be able to watch the movie before the social media embargo lifts. However, there has been social media talk that some influencers did get to see the film as part of junket interviews and they would be able to give their thoughts on the film at the embargo.

David Ehrlich, a critic for Indiewire said this was very different to his account of reviewing Disclosure Day where he says him and fellow critics were only able to see the movie a day before their review embargo but the social media reaction embargo lifted before and were hailing the movie as Spielberg’s best weeks before any critics ever got to see the film.
Suffice to say, while there will be some social media influencer buzz about the film, it sounds like there will be a lot more thoughts from critics proportionally which it seems like was the goal for Nolan and Universal.
The Odyssey is based on Homer’s poem of the same name. It follows Odysseus, the King of Ithica after the events of the Trojan War, as he tries to make it back home to the kingdom of Ithica where he faces countless mythical obstacles that halt his journey. Back in Ithica, Telemachus, Odysseus’ son also sets on his own journey to find his father.

The only knock so far in the first reactions call it too clunky to be S-tier Nolan but it highlights the third act of the movie and its scale. One specific highlight included the mention of a sequence featuring Samantha Morton’s Circe that Discussing Film’s Andrew J. Salazar says “the best of the entire film and we’re going to be talking about it for years to come”.
