Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is the fourth instalment in the live-action Sonic franchise. The film is inspired by Sonic Adventure 2 and was first announced in February 2022 during the ViacomCBS’s investor event. Filming for the animated characters began in July 2023 in Surrey, England while physical actors began filming later due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes in November 2023 in London. Filming was concluded in March 2024.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 will show the origin of Shadow The Hedgehog also known as the Ultimate Lifeform created by Gerald Robotnik. We first saw Shadow during the post credits scene of Sonic The Hedgehog 2 where it was stated that Project Shadow was created over 50 years ago. When Shadow is determined to destroy humanity, Sonic and his friends are forced to team up with Robotnik to stop him. Shadow’s creator Gerald Robotnik also appears in the film, however his intentions are unknown.

The plot is further explained in the synopsis:

Sonic the Hedgehog returns to the big screen this holiday season in his most thrilling adventure yet. Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.
