The Wrap reports that Netflix has “quietly canceled” all Army of the Dead sequels and spin-offs.
Before shifting his focus to his new sci-fi space opera franchise, Rebel Moon, Zack Snyder worked on Army of the Dead, released in 2021 on Netflix. The film was intended to kick off a new franchise, but only a prequel, Army of Thieves (2021), was ultimately released.
In a conversation with The Wrap for the release of Rebel Moon‘s director’s cuts, Zack and Deborah Snyder revealed to the outlet that all sequels and spin-offs were “quietly canceled”. Read the excerpt from the article below:
“Army of the Dead,” a movie the Snyders made for Netflix before “Rebel Moon,” had a similarly ambitious plan, with several sequels and spin-offs in the works (one, the prequel “Army of Thieves,” was actually released), along with an animated series. The animated series was quietly canceled, along with plans for subsequent films. Zack said, “We are very ambitious with everything.” And “Army of the Dead” isn’t entirely dead, as Deborah pointed out that there will be a themed experience coming to the Six Flags theme parks this Halloween. “It’s going to be a really cool experience,” she added.
Given that the last Army of the Dead project was nearly three years ago and the last bit of news we heard about the series was in November of last year, the cancellation may not come as a surprise. However, the original film and its prequel did numbers, pulling in over 40 million views combined.
Ambitious as ever, Snyder is trying his hand at yet another franchise kickstarter with Rebel Moon. He intends to turn the IP into a cinematic universe. The franchise kicked off recently with the release of the first film and its director’s cuts. The series is intended to be 4-6 movies total, as well as supplementary content, including books, comics, games, and television series. It remains to be seen whether Snyder’s vision will come to fruition or if it’s destined to fail like Army of the Dead.
The divisive director’s next project is Twilight of the Gods, an anime based on Norse mythology, for Netflix. The show marks Snyder’s first venture into television and his return to the animation medium after almost 15 years since his 2010 animated fantasy film, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole.
