‘Among Us Story: On Guard’ Demo Review: Beginnings Of A Mystery

While it leaves you wanting more, the ‘Among Us Story: On Guard’ demo is able to give players a general idea of where the spinoff is headed.

While I may not be the best at outwitting my crewmates as I attempt to eliminate them all as an impostor, Among Us still holds a special place in my heart. I love exploring the maps, completing my tasks and just enjoy the overall silliness of the game, which makes Among Us Story: On Guard right up my alley.

Among Us Story: On Guard is a narrative-focused spinoff of the main game. As a new member of the MIRA Research & Development team, you’re tasked with testing out a training simulator that helps new crewmates identify impostors. In this simulation you’ll take on the role of ‘Guard’ who will solve the murder of a dear friend.

The announcement of this spinoff title came as a complete surprise, when Innersloth first announced the game as a special announcement at Summer Games Fest. I instantly assumed that it’d be an update on the animated series (little did we know, the series was shadow dropped on Paramount+ a few hours earlier). The idea of a story focused version of Among Us instantly grabbed my interest and I’ve been excited ever since.

Thankfully to celebrate the 8th anniversary of Among Us on June 15th, 2026, Innersloth dropped a demo for Among Us Story: On Guard as part of Steam Next Fest, available for free until June 22nd. While I’m a little late to the party, I knew I had to try it out as soon as I could.

As I opened the demo, the game felt instantly familiar for fans of the series starting off with familiar controls and art style. The opening segment’s dialogue is entertaining, sprinkling in references to the main title, but new players can still get a kick out of it and as they play through the demo they’ll be able to understand some of these easter eggs themselves.

Once I entered the training simulation and took on the role of Guard, I was instantly attached to the silliness of the character. Their dialogue can be summed up as a parody of Batman, always highlighting the importance of justice. This extends to most of the characters as comedy is a highlight of their dialogue.

As it’s a demo, I was determined to test the limits of my freedom and I found that the game felt quite restrictive in exploration, but that could be a result of its intended playtime of around 20 minutes. Minigames were quite the opposite, I was able to mess around to my heart’s content without fear of being on a time limit or having an NPC constantly guide me to the right solution. While you won’t spend much time in this spinoff just yet, players are still able to experience enough to grasp what the game has to offer.

Overall, I enjoyed the demo for what it was. I had a good time trying to test its limits and getting some good laughs out of the character’s dialogue. My only regret is that I’m left wanting more, I wish we could explore more of the areas and participate in other minigames. I also find myself curious about the game’s overall length and whether we’ll just find ourselves in this single simulation with three possible endings.
