‘Warfare’ Digital Release Date Revealed

The digital release date for A24’s Warfare, which released on April 11th and was directed by Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland, has been revealed

Only 3 weeks after its release, we have the digital release date for A24‘s Warfare. The film released in cinemas on April 11th.

From the moment it was announced, Warfare came with a large amount of controversy, partly due to its subject matter, which delves into the brutal realities of modern warfare, though the bulk of that was aimed at the decision to set the movie within the Iraq War, leading communities online to disregard the movie, with the main criticism being that the movie would be a ‘white saviour’ story that painted the Americans as heroes.

It has now been revealed that Warfare will be released on digital on May 6th.

Much like A24’s recent movies Opus and Death of a Unicorn, the theatrical windows for their releases have been very small, likely due to poor box office. The film has only reached $17 million after 2 weeks in cinemas, being massively overshadowed by Warner Bros. monster hits Minecraft and Sinners.

Although the budget was only a reported $20 million, there was a lot of marketing done for the movie, specifically a lot of cast interviews and push of the actors as opposed to a traditional route of lots of TV spots and posters.

This, however, is another reason that the movie is under a lot of fire.

The decision to cast actors typically associated with lighthearted roles in romantic comedies and teen dramas into a gritty, emotionally charged war film left some audiences sceptical. For some, the casting seemed like a mismatch; for others, it was a bold redefinition of what modern war stories could look like.

Whilst it’s good for actors to demonstrate their range and venture out into a variety of projects, it is interesting to note the choice of actors and the specific background and demographics they bring with them.

A lot of these actors became famous through roles on streaming and network shows, so perhaps the movie being online will encourage even more people to see it as that’s how they are used to consuming these actors, so Warfare’s digital release will likely bring it even more attention than before.

With Warfare coming soon to digital, you will be able to watch it for yourself and form your own opinion, and A24 will be hoping for a much better turnout online than in the cinemas.
