Culture staple The Cure has returned from the grave, dropping their first song in 16 years, “Alone”.
One of the most influential bands of all time, The Cure, has made a return to music-making with the first song from The Cure’s upcoming Songs of a Lost World album, “Alone”. It’s the band’s first song in a whopping 16 years despite the band continuing playing throughout the last five decades.
Frontman Robert Smith says this new song, “Alone”, was “the track that unlocked the record; as soon as we had that piece of music recorded I knew it was the opening song, and I felt the whole album come into focus.”
He continues, “I had been struggling to find the right opening line for the right opening song for a while, working with the simple idea of ‘being alone’, always in the back of my mind this nagging feeling that I already knew what the opening line should be… as soon as we finished recording I remembered the poem Dregs by the English poet Ernest Dowson. That was the moment when I knew the song – and the album – were real.”

To date, The Cure has a total of 13 released albums, ranging from their debut Three Imaginary Boys (1979) to their latest 4:13 Dream (2008). Now, they are looking to move past lucky number 13 and Songs of a Lost World should do exactly that for them.
The move comes in an era of increased reunions and new music from beloved bands, following the fabled Oasis reunion announcement, and the return of Linkin Park.
While Songs of a Lost World doesn’t have an official tracklist yet, the band says it can be expected within the coming weeks via their social media outlets. Songs of a Lost World is expected on music streaming platforms on November 1st, 2024.
