Robert Eggers To Tackle Sequel To ‘Labyrinth’ For Sony
Auteur filmmaker Robert Eggers has reportedly joined Sony’s upcoming Labyrinth project.
In big news in an even bigger year for Robert Eggers, the filmmaker behind Nosferatu, The Lighthouse and The Northman is set to tackle a Labyrinth project from Sony and The Jim Henson Company. The report comes from journalist Jeff Sneider for his blog TheInSneider. In his report, he states that Robert Eggers has indeed been brought onto the project, with four other projects lined up.
In development for many years now, Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange, The Gorge) was previously attached before dropping out due to stalled development on the sequel. Eggers reportedly has since pitched a plan to not reboot, but reportedly follow up the original 1986 film.
Sneider further reports that Eggers will reunite with one of his previous co-writers to pen the script for the film, bringing down the options to his brother Max Eggers (The Lighthouse), and Sjón (The Northman), with Sneider leaning towards the latter.
The original 1986 Labyrinth followed a young Jennifer Connelly who attempts to save her baby brother from the villainous, and now iconic, Jareth the Goblin King (David Bowie). The film has since gone on to receive a status as a cult classic. Following the death of Bowie in 2016, Jareth may have to be recast if Eggers chooses to follow up in the film in a similar direction to the original.
On a final note in his newsletter, Jeff Sneider does mention that years ago he did hear mentions of Alexander Skarsgård playing the Goblin King in a Labyrinth project. The information is interesting with Skarsgård previously collaborating with Eggers and Sjón in 2022’s The Northman for Focus Features, where he served as star and producer.
The film is set to be produced by Maiden Voyage Pictures’ Chris Columbus (Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone, Home Alone) and daughter Eleanor Columbus. For The Jim Henson Company, Lisa Henson will produce with Brian Henson attached as executive producer.
Labyrinth was released in 1986 and was directed by the legendary Jim Henson. The film starred Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie. Eggers’ latest, Nosferatu, is now playing in theatres worldwide.
