Despite insisting on retirement outside of the Sonic The Hedgehog franchise, legendary comedic actor Jim Carrey is set to return for a sequel to 2000’s smash hit How The Grinch Stole Christmas, with the original director Ron Howard returning.

Starring Carrey as the titular Grinch, the first film adapted Dr Seuss’s childrens book and followed a hateful green creature named The Grinch, who due to past experiences, despises Christmas. He unhatched a plan to steal Christmas from Whoville, a town populated by creatures known as Whos, but is later converted from his hate by the young Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen).

The film also starred Christine Baranski, Jeffrey Tambor, Bill Irwin, and Molly Shannon though its unclear if they and Momsen will return.

The new film is being penned by three satirical writers, Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and David Mandel, coming off the likes of Barry, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Veep, and Silicon Valley

Seuss’s widow, Audrey Geisel, previously banned any further live action Dr Seuss movies following the critical failure of The Cat in the Hat. Since then, the writer’s works have continued only as animated projects with films such as Horton Hears A Who, The Lorax, and The Grinch. The question then arises is that does this film have the approval of the Seuss estate?

How The Grinch Stole Christmas recently celebrated its 25th anniversary with a rerelease at Universal Pictures, where the sequel is being setup at.
