Developed as a loose adaptation of Donald Westlake’s The Ax and remake of French film Le Couperet, Chan-wook’s latest project follows a man, Man Soo (Lee Byung-hun) who, struggling to make ends meet, kills other applicants to secure a new job position.
The film also stars Son Ye-jin as Mi-Ri, Park Hee-soon as Choi Seon-Chul, Lee Sung-min as Koo Beom-Mo and began production back in late August 2024. Chan-wook had been wanting to create the remake for the better part of two decades, but delayed it due to an influx of other projects to tackle, which eventually led the film to become a Korean language picture rather than an English one.
A new report from Korean outlet Xsport News, suggests that No Other Choice has wrapped filming, five months after production commencement, and is aiming for a Fall 2025 release, possibly debuting at Cannes Film Festival. The reveal was coupled with a first official image of the film, as well as a behind-the-scenes image of Chan-wook on the set of the movie.

Chan-wook last directed episodes of HBO’s The Sympathizer, which followed espionage in the Vietnam War, with Hoa Xuande playing the lead, and Academy Award winner Robert Downey in five antagonist roles. His last film, Decision to Leave, was shortlisted for an Academy Award for Best International Feature back in 2022, and was one of his signature neo-noir films, with him previously being known for Oldboy, and the Sympathy trilogy.
No Other Choice is written and directed by Park Chan-wook, stars Lee Byung-hun and Son Ye-jin, and is aiming for a Fall 2025 release.
