In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Neve Campbell gave insight into the upcoming Scream instalment. “We are going to follow Sidney” she said, a stark contrast to the previous two films which centred on Melissa Barerra’s Sam Carpenter and Jenna Ortega’s Tara Carpenter.

She also mentioned that her return to the franchise will be in the same vein as Jamie Lee Curtis’ involvement in the legacy sequels of the Halloween franchise. Campbell also detailed the pitch process to her, saying “They did pitch the concept to me, and it’s the reason that I jumped on board,” but does add she hasn’t seen a final script for the film, which she is expecting within the next week.

Campbell first played Sidney Prescott in the 1996 film Scream, which set the bar for slashers and has since become a classic. She went on to reprise the role in Scream 2, Scream 3, Scream 4, and the fifth movie simply titled Scream. She would not reprise her role in Scream VI however due to a pay dispute which has since been settled.

The actress addresses her love for the audience and fandom of the Scream movies too, with the statement “I love these movies, they are so much fun to be a part of, I’m so grateful for them, I could never have imagined being a part of a movie that would have lasted this many decades. The fandom is nuts, they are incredible and very passionate about these films, I’m excited to give them a new one!”

She also spoke of the possibility of other legacy characters returning in the seventh film, saying “Mayhaps”.

Campbell’s return comes after Melissa Barerra was fired from production in November 2023 for her support of the Palestinian people during the ongoing Israel-Palestine War. Immediately following this, Jenna Ortega also left the project under the pretence that the filming schedule for Netflix’s Wednesday conflicted with that of Scream VII. Director Christopher Landon also left the project before Kevin Williamson joined four months later.

Scream VII is currently in development at Paramount Pictures and stars Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott. The film is directed and written by Kevin Williamson and is currently undated.
