Robert Pattinson is asked countlessly what it’s like to die as he plays an expendable clone in the new trailer for Mickey 17.
The upcoming film from director Bong Joon-Ho is based on the 2022 sci-fi novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton. The novel follows expendable space colonist Mickey Barnes, tasked with taking on the most dangerous mission to colonize the ice world, Niflheim. Every time Mickey dies, he is cloned again, and all the same memories are intact.
It seems from the teaser trailer that Bong Joon-ho’s adaptation will retain much of the novel’s premise. However, Ashton told Nerdist in 2022 that Bong will be changing “a lot” about the book:
I’ve had people ask me, “Are you nervous?” Literally, Director Bong is going to change a lot about the book. When I spoke with him, he made it pretty clear. “You’ve got a 350-page book. I’m gonna have a 120-page script. There’s a lot that’s gonna go.” So my answer is no, I’m not concerned about that at all. In my view, the man’s a genius.
The following synopsis for the film was provided:
The unlikely hero, Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson), has found himself in the extraordinary circumstance of working for an employer who demands the ultimate commitment to the job to die for a living.
Fans eagerly awaited the release, and to many people’s surprise, the trailer dropped rather late at 8 PM ET. You can view the trailer below:
The trailer features a montage of Mickey Barnes’s (Robert Pattinson) various lives as he dies and comes back as clones. However, on one cycle, we see two clones of Mickey designated as “multiples.” We are also shown new loots at Mark Ruffalo, Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, and Toni Collette.
The film was previously dated for a March 2024 release; however, was delayed to 2025 due to the dual SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes affecting post-production.
Alongside Robert Pattinson, Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 will star Toni Colette, Naomi Ackie, Mark Ruffalo, Steven Yeun, and Angus Imrie. The film hits theatres internationally on January 28th, 2025, and nationwide on January 31st, 2025.
