‘Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ Officially Reveals Cast At CinemaCon
New Line Cinema has revealed a full cast for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum at CinemaCon, including Jamie Dornan as Strider and returning actors such as Lee Pace, Elijah Wood, and Ian McKellen.
It’s been a strong few weeks for Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, with high profile celebrities in talks to join the cast of the film, and Elijah Wood confirming some of the casting in an interview with Josh Horowitz. Now, Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum has an official cast.
In an announcement which was also released online, Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum has onboarded Andy Serkis as Gollum aka Smeagol, Ian McKellen as Gandalf the Grey, Kate Winslet as Marigol, Jamie Dornan as Strider (later to be known as Aragorn / King Elessar), and Leo Woodall as Halvard.
This is different to what was previously theorized with Kate Winslet now being theorized to play Smeagol’s mother. Jamie Dornan was not leaked at all in casting grids, but has now replaced Viggo Mortensen as Strider, the human aid of The Hobbit’s in their journey between Bree and Rivendell, and later a member of the Fellowship. Leo Woodall will instead be playing a new character named Halvard, who does not have origins in the source material by J.R.R Tolkien.

Further, Lee Pace will officially reprise his role as Thranduil (from The Hobbit trilogy) in The Hunt for Gollum. He recently appeared as the villain of Invincible Season 4, which is currently airing on Prime Video, with its finale airing next week. Elijah Wood will also return as Frodo Baggins, who is expected to appear at the start and end of the story.
The film takes place in a seventeen-year period between Bilbo’s 111th Birthday Party and Frodo’s departure for Bree, where Gandalf enlists Strider to help him hunt Gollum down. This story is all but confirmed now given the cast list, and characters such as Thranduil appearing (who resides in Mirkwood where much of the story takes place).
No official word on whether Anya Taylor-Joy will join the film, following her talks earlier this year.
The film is set to begin production next month for a confirmed December 17, 2027, release date in theatres worldwide.
Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will be directed by Andy Serkis and stars Serkis, Ian McKellen, Jamie Dornan, Kate Winslet, Leo Woodall, Elijah Wood, and Lee Pace. The film releases in theatres on December 17, 2027.
