Following a critical failure with Taika Waititi’s 2022 film Thor: Love & Thunder, Thor 5 will enter production in late 2025.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in a bit of a slump as of late, following last year’s box office disappointments The Marvels and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, now it seems they’re trying to alleviate that tension.
Thor, the alien god of thunder, is one of the MCU’s most popular characters, who made his debut in the franchise way back in 2011. He has since appeared in nine MCU projects, ranging from his solo films to The Avengers saga and the What If…? series.
Thor 5 in ‘25
And now he is set to return for his tenth, and fifth solo film. In a new report from industry insider Daniel Richtman, the new film is set to begin filming in late 2025. A date that sets the filming period two and a half years after the fourth film, Thor: Love & Thunder, which did decently well box office wise.
Further, Richtman claims that the studio is currently searching for a writer and director for the film, which shouldn’t be too hard given several big directors have already stated their willingness to indulge in such an endeavour. Just one of them is George Miller, director of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which also starred Hemsworth.
Richtman also states that is unknown if the film is slated for a release before or after Avengers: Secret Wars but guesses it will be after.
What Cast Will Be Returning?
In terms of plot, it can be inferred that it will revolve around Brett Goldstein’s Hercules antagonising Thor due to the attack on his father, Zeus (Russell Crowe). Following this train of thought, it’s possible Russell Crowe also returns for the film. The prior film did end with Thor teaming up with Gorr’s (Christian Bale) daughter, Love, who was played by India Hemsworth. It is currently unknown if the character will be recast but it’s entirely possible that she returns to the role.
Although Taika Waititi will not return to direct, he may return in his role as Korg, a comedic character. Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie may pop up again as well, last appearing in 2023’s The Marvels. But what we can expect of course is the return of Chris Hemsworth as the iconic hammer-wielding hero.
