‘The Exorcist: Martyrs’ Trailer Is Mike Flanagan At His Scariest
The Exorcist: Martyrs is written and directed by Mike Flanagan and it will seemingly be his scariest film yet.
Following developmental turmoil and a subsequent reboot, the first Exorcist film since 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer is finally on its way with an official trailer, and Mike Flanagan is touting the film as his scariest, surpassing Doctor Sleep, Oculus and Ouija: Origin of Evil. Watch the first trailer for The Exorcist: Martyrs below:
The trailer sees Scarlett Johansson’s Detective Julie Miller start uncovering a new mystery beginning with an altar boy who is ritualistically murdered beneath a church, leading the detective to make connections between America’s most notorious serial killers, stemming all the way back to biblical times. Read the synopsis below:
Thirteen years ago, New York City detective Julie Miller (Johansson) ended the terror reign of satanic serial killer Father Sunday. The case made her a hero, and she has thrown herself into her work ever since. Now a new killer scrawls her name in an altar boy’s blood on the walls of a church crypt, dragging her back into the darkness she believed she had buried with him.
Aided by former prison chaplain Father William (Academy Award® nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor), who heard Father Sunday’s final confession, and sharp rookie detective Gina Restrepo (Sasha Calle, The Rip), Detective Miller will discover a filament linking a lineage of serial killers, from H.H. Holmes to the Zodiac, that could corrupt everything, and everyone, she loves with an evil that goes well beyond the mortal.

Following the release of the trailer, rumours have begun circulating that the film is a direct sequel to The Exorcist III, with Jeff Sneider pointing out that ScarJo’s Miller may be the daughter of William F. Kinderman who searches for a serial killer with a knack for demonic murders. That film was based on William Peter Blatty’s Legion, a word that is heavily referenced in this new trailer with the quote “We are Legion, for we are many.” The poster for The Exorcist: Martyrs also bares similarities to The Exorcist III.
