Michael Bay In Final Talks For ‘Transformers’ Sequel At Paramount
The Bayhem is back with Michael Bay in final talks to direct Transformers 8 at Skydance.
With the Paramount-Warner Bros merger now complete, David Ellison is making big moves in order to meet his 30+ film guarantee that he made with state AGs in order to get the merger approved. Skydance has courted Michael Bay, best known for helming the first Transformers film and the first two Bad Boys instalments, to direct the film in his return to the iconic Hasbro franchise.
Page Six Hollywood reported the news that, if guaranteed final cut, Michael Bay will proceed with final talks to sign on as director of Transformers 8, following the underwhelming box office grosses of 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and 2024’s animated Transformers: One.
Deadline reports that in addition to Michael Bay returning, Steven Spielberg will also return as executive producer and will focus on all the creative aspects of the franchise with Lorenzo di Bonaventura.
Michael Bay helped bring the cartoon/toy franchise to the big screen with the first film back in 2007 before going on to direct a further four movies, starring Shia LeBeuof, Megan Fox, Peter Cullen, and later Mark Wahlberg.
The franchise follows aliens who take the form of shapeshifting vehicular robots who battle other shapeshifting robots in a fight between good and evil. Optimus Prime voice actor Peter Cullen passed away earlier this year, so now eyes are pointed at who will be playing Optimus Prime in the upcoming instalment of the beloved franchise.
Transformers is just one of the IP films that Skydance has ushered into development following the 30 film guarantee that CEO David Ellison made to AG Rob Bonta and others during negotiations a few weeks ago. Reports suggest that he will be prioritising a sequel to 2023’s Barbie, another film based on toys, and is currently developing sequels to Days of Thunder, Top Gun, The Adventures of Tintin, A Quiet Place, and World War Z, as well as Warner Bros. properties like Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, several Lord of the Rings films, and the DC Universe.
