‘Aegon’s Conquest’ Release Date & Director Confirmed

The ‘Game of Thrones’ universe will finally make its way to the big screen with ‘Aegon’s Conquest’.

Warner Bros. announced this week the director and release date for George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire’s first feature film outing in theaters. The previously announced Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest will kick off Warner Bros. summer slate in a few years, coming to theaters on June 1st, 2029.

Announced earlier this year as competing scripts for either a TV show or feature film, it was later confirmed earlier that a feature film screenplay would be developed by House of Cards’ creator and writer Beau Willimon, who most recently wrote for the impeccable Andor on Disney+.

Warner Bros. has also announced a director for the film, Owen Harris. Probably best known for his work on Black Mirror. This is actually a return to Westeros for Harris, having directed three episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms earlier this year on HBO.

What is Aegon’s Conquest?

Aegon’s Conquest, mentioned sporadically throughout the HBO shows and in Martin’s novels, is the campaign by Aegon Targaryen, later King Aegon I Targaryen, and his sister-wives to take over the scattered kingdoms of Westeros. Detailed in the first few chapters of Martin’s Fire & Blood, released in 2018, the conquest is a pivotal piece of Westerosi history oft mentioned, but never before seen on screen.

The Conquest is a violent, brutal piece of history of Westeros that set the stage for everything we’ve seen so far, from Game of Thrones to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

Many characters mentioned over the years in the HBO shows will make an appearance, including Harren Hoare, who had Harrenhal in its glory days, and, evidently, Alys Rivers. Many of the houses we know will play a role as well, including Meria and House Martell, as well as House Stark in the North.

Thanks to House of the Dragon, we now know part of, if not Aegon’s primary motivation for invading Westeros was due to the existence of the White Walkers and the threat to the North. Aegon’s dream is sure to make an appearance, along with everybody’s favorite Catspaw dagger.
