Two years after James Gunn’s first DC Universe film began production, the sequel to Superman, and next chapter in the Gods & Monsters story, Man of Tomorrow, is now filming. The film will serve as the fourth DC Universe film following the release of Superman, and the upcoming Supergirl and Clayface projects in development at the WB Pictures subsidiary.
James Gunn revealed the anticipated news on his social platforms with an image on the inside of a prison showing a chessboard and a inmate ID card for Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) The image also shows a look at the slate for the film, which depicts a first logo for the film: combining the House of El crest that Superman bears with three dots, imagery closely associated with Brainiac, who will be making his cinematic debut in the film with a portrayal by Lars Eidinger.
The film, which is led by David Corenswet and Hoult, recently rounded out its main cast with Adria Arjona joining in a female role rumoured to be Maxima, whilst Aaron Pierre brings John Stewart to the big screen for the first time. Rachel Brosnahan and Isabel Merced return as Lois Lane and Hawkgirl respectively, with Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, Sara Sampaio, and Skyler Gisondo again playing Guy Gardner, Mr. Terrific, Eve Teschmacher, and Jimmy Olsen. The latter is set to receive his own TV show, which has been said to be starting production shortly after Man of Tomorrow, but currently remains closely under wraps.
Man of Tomorrow is scheduled to hit theatres July 9, 2027, exactly two years after the release of Superman, which dominated the same July weekend in 2025. The film is directed by James Gunn, executive produced by Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran, and now in production.
