'The Odyssey' Trailer Release Sparks Historical Accuracy Complaints

Universal Pictures has released the first online trailer for The Odyssey and many online are criticizing it for its disregard for historical accuracy. Read our The Odyssey trailer release article.

The trailer, which sees Matt Damon’s Odysseus journey on his titular Odyssey, showcases looks at Agamemnon (Benny Safdie) in black steel armour, the cave of the Cyclops Polythemus, and a rough sea voyage. Watch that trailer below:

The armour in particular has been the focus on most of the criticism, critiquing the protective wear as akin to Darth Vader, the famous Star Wars villain. It’s clear that Christopher Nolan does not care about the intricacies of such a tale and rather focuses on telling a good and epic story.

The Odyssey tells the tale of Odysseus, a Greek king, whose travel from Troy, following the Trojan War, home lasts an intense 10 years pitting him against gods, monsters, and wicked weather. It’s Nolan’s most ambitious project yet, adapting source material that is thousands of years old, all whilst giving it its own flair.

The film’s synopsis reads as follows:

Christopher Nolan’s next film, The Odyssey, is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX® film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX® film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.

This sentiment is similar to the reactions of Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, which inserted entire sequences and events into the film that did not happen in the real life of the French general. Scott’s response? “Get a life.” It seems that both Nolan and Scott are in the movie making business, rather than becoming documentarians, they have embraced fictionalized narratives to tell the best stories they deem possible.
