'Pluribus' Season 1 Ending Explained

The first season of Pluribus Season 1 is now finally over and audiences are left with many questions after that finale that completely changes the status quo and the allegiances of several of its main characters.

Created by Vince Gilligan, the man behind shows such as Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, and The X-Files, Pluribus follows immune individual Carol Sturka as an alien invasion, spread by a contagion, ravages the globe rendering her one of a dozen people left on the planet. Leading into the finale, only she, as well as Paraguayan man Manuosos distrust these aliens, teasing their meeting as important for the fate of the human race.

The synopsis for the series reads as follows:

The most miserable person on Earth must save the world from happiness.

Manuosos finally arrives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, concluding his journey looking for Carol. As he arrives in his ambulance, he proposes the idea that Carol’s home is bugged, but it turns out that is not the case.

At night, Manuosos calls The Others and request that the Other that Carol has been talking to is sent to him. There, Manuosos asks her very specific questions and once Carol finds out and takes Zosia away, he requests another, where he attempts to exorcise the alien hivemind from its body. This sends The Others into a global seizure forcing The Others to abandon Manuosos like they once did to Carol, taking her with them on holiday.

While there, Zosia keeps wishing for Carol to complete The Joining, telling her a Peruvian woman just completed the Joining (which is shown in the episode opening), and Carol soons finds out that the Others have Carol’s frozen eggs and are extracting stem cells from them to force Carol to join them. Carol, being thoroughly against this, travels back to Albuquerque in a helicopter and tells Manuosos that he wins and that she will help him save the world. She has a large metal crate with her that the helicopter carried, and she tells Manuosos that it is an atom bomb, leaving the episode on a cliffhanger.

What Did Manuosos Do To The Others?

In order to attempt to turn the Other back into a normal uninfected person, Manuosos verbally abused them to send them into the global seizure state, turned on a radio frequency at a certain level and then whispered into their ear begging them to come back.

Although he was ultimately unsuccessful, Carol did interrupt him by shooting her gun at a wall and he was not able to properly coax the man back out. This means that this method could work in the future.

We do know there IS a way to reverse The Joining, as Zosia let slip earlier on in the season.

Carol returns to Albuquerque with an atom bomb, a reference to episode three where it was foreshadowed with the ending of Carol questioning whether the Others would give her a nuke. Episode 3 is titled “Grenade”, after the Others gave her a live grenade after she requested it.

She likely asked for it, if there even is an atom bomb in the crate, as the conclusion of Episode 3 was that they would give her a bomb.
