What Happens At The End Of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Season 1?

Towards the end of the season 1 finale, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 episode 6, Ser Duncan the Tall, still recovering from his immense injuries of the day before, requests an audience with Prince Maekar Targaryen (Sam Spruell), the father of Daeron, Aerion, and Aegon. Dunk asks the Prince if he may continue to have Aegon (aka Egg) on as his squire but he declines.
Later, Ser Duncan is preparing to leave the jousting tournament where the season took place, saddling up his horses when Egg approaches, ready to join him in his journey, implying to Dunk that his father had changed his mind. Dunk gives him a horse to keep, and the two journey off. A high angled shot showcases the two trotting away, followed by the ghost of Ser Arlan of Pennytree (Danny Webb) who rides behind them on a white horse. As they ride, he veers off in a moment akin to the ending of Furious 7, where Dom and Brian drive together for one last time.
A new title card plays, reading “A Knight of the Nine Kingdoms.” In the closing moments of the series, Prince Maekar frantically looks for his son, implying Egg snuck off to journey with Dunk again.
Why Is Ser Arlan Of Pennytree In The Final Scene Of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Season 1 Episode 6?

Ser Arlan’s presence in the final scene of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 serves as a metaphorical close to Dunk’s first arc. The show opens with him relying on Ser Arlan, even in death, and at a pivotal point in the series relies on a memory of Ser Arlan to wake him up in the midst of battle. The ending symbolizes Dunk leaving him behind and becoming his own night. This coupled with Dunk literally leaving Arlan’s engraved emblem penny and embedding it in the tree under which he sleeps over the season.
What Does The New Title Card Mean At The End Of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Season 1?
The new title card, A Knight of the Nine Kingdoms, is a reference to the the dialogue that Egg has with Dunk at the end of the episode about there being Nine kingdoms and not Seven. As far as we can tell, this is not a concept explored in the novellas the series is adapting.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall, Dexter Sol Ansell as Prince Aegon “Egg” Targaryen, Sam Spruell as Prince Maekar Targaryen, Danny Webb as Ser Arlan of Pennytree, Finn Bennett as Prince Aerion “Brightflame” Targaryen, Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel “The Laughing Storm” Baratheon, Bertie Carvel as Prince Baelor “Breakspear” Targaryen, and Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle.
