Zendaya Joins ‘Shrek 5’, Teaser Trailer Invites Controversial New Look

Fifteen years after the last Shrek film, a teaser trailer has been released for the long-awaited fifth instalment and fans aren’t too happy.

Zendaya Joins ‘Shrek 5’, Teaser Trailer Invites Controversial New Look

Fans all around the world have been at war with each other ever since the Shrek 5 cast announcement teaser dropped on February 28th. The teaser, dropped to announce Zendaya’s involvement in the film, has been criticized for its new updated art style, continuity errors and its animation in general. Watch the Shrek 5 trailer below:

Audiences were expecting an updated art style with the release of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish nearly three years ago capturing the hearts of audiences. That film used a drawn art style, inspired by the style of the Spider-Verse films as well as Mitchells vs The Machines. That art style and film were well received, leading to a nomination at that year’s Academy Awards but ultimately lost to Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio

Examples of disdain for the trailer include that of James Phyrillas, known as Schaffrillas online, who points out criticism of the poor inclusion of meme culture and a wonky art style. That however has not stopped the trailer from racking up millions of views, even breaking the most viewed trailer record on popular aggregator and entertainment outlet DiscussingFilm.

Ultimately, it is clear that the Shrek franchise remains strong, despite a fifteen year absence of its mainline franchise, and it’s clear that the Oscar-winning original quadrilogy has remained in the public eye for newer generations to witness. The question is whether this hype will translate to the box office is anybody’s guess, and we will have to wait and see — an act that will have fans waiting for two full years ahead of its December 23, 2026, theatrical release.

The film stars Mike Myers, returning as the titular Shrek, Cameron Diaz returning as his ogre bride Fiona, Eddie Murphy as the annoying but loveable Donkey and Zendaya playing Shrek’s daughter Felicia. In the past films, Shrek had three children, as triplets, so the casting for Fergus and Farkle are presumably still coming. Other fan favourites that we can expect to see (but aren’t confirmed) are Gingy (Conrad Vernon), Antonio Banderas’ Puss in Boots, and Wolf.

Shrek 5 will arrive in theatres on December 23, 2026, and will star Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy and Zendaya. Find where to watch the film, below.
