Blue Beetle star Xolo Maridueña reportedly confirmed Kumail Nanjiani’s casting in the DCU as washed-up hotshot Booster Gold.
A new report from Drew Reed of The Cosmic Circus suggests that Kumail Nanjiani may be playing the superhero within the James Gunn and Peter Safran-helmed DCU. Reed attended GalaxyCon in Raleigh, North Carolina, and while meeting the Cobra Kai cast, he questioned show lead Xolo Maridueña.
Reed asked Xolo about his thoughts on the current circulating rumour, initially reported by Nexus Point News, that Kumail Nanjiani (Eternals, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire) has been cast as Booster Gold. Maridueña reportedly revealed that he had indeed been cast as the character and that he was excited at the possibility of a team-up between his character (Blue Beetle) and Nanjiani’s.
Who Is Booster Gold?
In the comics, Booster Gold is a young hero from the 25th century who steals time-travelling technology to travel back to the present day and save the life of the President, rewarding him with fame. Although there is no concrete date set for his age, he does have the appearance of a mid-20s/30s adult. If Kumail Nanjiani’s casting is true, this would be quite the deviation from the comics.
Fans have speculated that this aged-up casting of Booster Gold would be to match it with the casting of Ted Kord, the second Blue Beetle. Although not specifically canon to the DCU, the events of Blue Beetle likely set Ted Kord as a middle-aged man. And with an eerie post-credit teaser, fans believe Kord will be played by Jason Sudeikis going forward.
Where Next For Booster Gold?
As for where we can see Booster Gold in the DCU, it has been widely speculated where and how he will appear due to how future DC projects are being cast. James Gunn commented on the studio’s casting techniques back in March of this year, stating that films (and presumably series) are generally cast after a script is finished. So if Booster has been cast, as many have suggested, then he must be in either Creature Commandos, Superman, or Peacemaker Season 2. That is unless he is an exception to the rule.
On top of this possible project, Booster Gold will be seen in his own Max series, which is currently in development at the streamer and DC Studios. There is also a possibility he will join Xolo Maridueña in the upcoming Blue Beetle animated series.
