While promoting his new film, The Dead Don’t Hurt, the actor was given the chance to comment on his willingness to return to one of the most acclaimed film roles ever in the fourth live-action Lord of the Rings film.

Speaking to GQ Magazine UK, the actor was asked if he shared a similar sentiment to one he had over ten years ago. Back then while Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy was in development, the actor declined to star in the films due to the lack of his character in the novels they were adapting.

This time, however, he’s more than happy to join the production under the condition that the story warrants his involvement. He’s quoted in this extract, published May 28:

“Sure. I don’t know exactly what the story is, I haven’t heard. Maybe I’ll hear about it eventually. I like playing that character. I learned a lot playing the character. I enjoyed it a lot. I would only do it if I was right for it in terms of, you know, the age I am now and so forth. I would only do it if I was right for the character. It would be silly to do it otherwise.”

Although we officially do not know the plot of The Hunt For Gollum, we can assume it will follow the only story regarding the hunting of Gollum in J.R.R Tolkien’s works. During a 17-year blank period following Bilbo’s Farewell Party, Gandalf enlists Aragorn to search for Sméagol, our titular Gollum.

This would alleviate the problem of them not adapting an Aragorn story and this way, Aragorn would actually be able to have a place in the story.

Upcoming for the Lord of the Rings franchise is the second season of the Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power series, which recently cast Rory Kinnear as the first live-action Tom Bombadil, and The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim

Warner Bros.Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is directed by Andy Serkis, produced by Fran Walsh, Peter Jackson and Philippa Boyens. It is executively produced by Serkis, Ken Kamins, and Jonathan Cavendish and is written by Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens as well as Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. The only star attached to the film is Andy Serkis who reprises his role as Gollum.
