The highly anticipated Sonic The Hedgehog 3 has just released its first trailer, introducing Shadow The Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves).
The first film, Sonic The Hedgehog raced to theatre screens on February 14th, 2020. Coincidentally it’s the time where many fans fell in love with the idea of a live-action Sonic franchise. A little over 4 years later and the franchise is now onto its fourth installment (following the Paramount+ series Knuckles)..
Back on February 2nd, 2024, fans were treated to the first signs of marketing for the film with a logo reveal video which also revealed the return of Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Following that, exclusive footage was shown at CinemaCon on April 11th, 2024 where attendees were given their first look at the antagonist, Shadow The Hedgehog. A description was provided by Collider. Not long after, on April 15th, 2024, we learnt of the voice behind Shadow, Keanu Reeves (The Matrix, John Wick) via a report from The Hollywood Reporter. Marketing then went silent until this month on August 25th where Keanu’s casting would be officially revealed by the Sonic Movie Tiktok Page alongside images of Dr. Robotnik, Sonic and Shadow which appeared across the globe during the following day on August 26th.
After the events of the post credits scene found in the final moments of Sonic The Hedgehog 2, the film introduces Shadow The Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves) to the live action adaptation. You can watch the trailer below:
What Happens In The Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Trailer?
The trailer opens with shots of Tom (James Marsden), Knuckles (Idris Elba), Sonic (Ben Schwartz), and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey). After the Paramount, Sega and Original Film logos appear, we are shown Shadow (Keanu Reeves) breaking out of his cryogenic tube, cut to a scene of Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and crew flying above a city where they spot an explosion that they decide to investigate. They meet Shadow and attempt to fight him, Knuckles (Idris Elba) followed by Sonic both lose to this new foe. Cut to a new scene where they meet Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) who has let himself go, Sonic requests that they team up to stop this new threat. After a few action shots we reach the end of the video where Robotnik’s grandpa, Gerald Robotnik (Jim Carrey) is revealed.
The synopsis for the film reads as follows:
Sonic the Hedgehog returns to the big screen this holiday season in his most thrilling adventure yet. Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3, directed by Jeff Fowler, stars Ben Schwartz as Sonic The Hedgehog, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Miles “Tails” Prower, Idris Elba as Knuckles The Echidna, and Keanu Reeves as Shadow The Hedgehog. The film hits theatres on December 20th, 2024.
