Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney is reportedly being eyed for Edgar Wright’s remake of The Running Man.
Since her Hollywood breakthrough with Euphoria, Sydney Sweeney has been on the rise with hits such as Reality and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. She’s been on a particular hot streak as of late with Immaculate, Madame Web and Anyone But You.
And now it seems she will be reuniting with her Anyone But You co-star Glen Powell in Edgar Wright’s upcoming remake of The Running Man. In a new report from industry insider Daniel Richtman, best known by his online pseudonym DanielRPK, Sweeney is being eyed as the female lead in The Running Man.
The Running Man was first released in 1987 and was a loose adaptation of the Stephen King novel of the same name. It starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as Ben Richards, a man who is falsely convicted and must face punishment in the form of a game show. The game show follows runners (the convicts) as they are hunted by mercenaries known as stalkers, leading Richards to beat the game for his own survival.
Despite there being no lead female role in The Running Man, this remake will likely update the story to include Amber Mendez (originally played by María Conchita Alonso) in the film more, and with the popularity of Sweeney and Powell’s onscreen romance in Anyone But You, the likelihood of this is ever-increasing.
Edgar Wright is also in talks to direct an upcoming remake of 1968’s Barbarella starring Sweeney, so this additionally lends credence to the rumour.
Wright is best known for Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World’s End, Baby Driver, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. He is currently working on The Running Man alongside writer Michael Bacall at Paramount Pictures.
