Spike Lee Reveals August Release Date For ‘Highest 2 Lowest’
In a response to one of his posts on Instagram, Spike Lee has revealed the release date of his next movie, a remake of Kurosawa’s ‘High and Low’ starring Denzel Washington.
Spike Lee’s next movie is getting closer and more details emerge as a result. We know that the movie is titled Highest 2 Lowest, a modern remake of the Akira Kurosawa classic High and Low. Lee is an undeniably talented filmmaker with a distinct style and a history of crafting socially relevant and gripping films, if there is one thing he understands – it’s character and how it is shaped by society, which relates heavily to the themes of class and privilege that are rampant in the original movie.
But on the other hand, his track record with remakes isn’t the strongest—his 2013 version of Oldboy was a critical and commercial misfire, widely seen as an unnecessary retelling of a near-perfect film. That failure has left many sceptical about whether he can do justice to another legendary director’s work.
In a reply on his Instagram, Lee replied to a fan asking when his next movie would be coming out with “August – Starring Mr.Denzel Washingon”. Highest 2 Lowest currently does not have an official release date, but we can now expect it to release in August.
Lee has previously clarified that his film will not be a direct remake.
“It’s a reinterpretation – not a remake! …In the Kurosawa film, the central character is a shoemaker. In our interpretation, Denzel is a New York record executive, the best in the business,” Lee says. “But my big wish is that I want people to see this in movie theatres. It will stream later on Apple.”
By his description, it seems that the spirit of the story will remain the same, but specifics have been retooled and fit more into a modern setting, which is to be expected of a remake.
After BlacKkKlansman in 2018, which earned him an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, his follow-up projects haven’t landed as strongly. Da 5 Bloods had solid performances but wasn’t universally embraced, and American Utopia was more of a concert film. This remake could be his big comeback, a chance to remind audiences why he’s one of the most important directors working today.
Highest 2 Lowest is directed by Spike Lee and based on the film High and Low by Akira Kurosawa. The film stars Denzel Washington, Jeffery Wright, Asap Rocky, Dean Winters and Ice Spice.
