‘Sonic The Hedgehog 3’ Review: An Epic Conclusion

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is a story about Shadow (Keanu Reeves), a character that’s been in stasis for 50 years and shares a striking resemblance to our titular hedgehog, Sonic (Ben Schwartz). Read the official synopsis below:

Sonic the Hedgehog returns to the big screen this holiday season in his most thrilling adventure yet. Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 quickly became one of my most anticipated films of the year, even surpassing my excitement for last year’s Marvel projects. The wait was well worth it as I wasn’t left disappointed.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Review

There was never a dull moment in the film, I was always invested in a good joke, a thrilling scene or learning any details about Shadow, a character that’s always caught my attention but I’ve never had a backstory that I associated with them.

Shadow’s visual effects throughout the film were well done, but I especially have to focus on certain scenes such as his breakout from stasis that shows an amazing level of detail that had me in awe. That’s not to say that Sonic, Tails (Colleen O’Shaugnessey) and Knuckles (Idris Elba) aren’t great as well, they feel especially more vibrant in this film.

Jim Carrey absolutely kills it as both Ivo and Gerald Robotnik, offering some funny exchanges as well as an overall good time for audiences to experience. Maria Robotnik (Alyla Browne) also helps a lot in humanizing Shadow for the audience, offering some heartwarming scenes between the two characters. I will say I was a bit disappointed with Director Rockwell (Krysten Ritter), as it never felt clear where her allegiance was during the entire conflict.

The final act of the film took me by surprise, while I was anticipating some parts of it I did not expect to feel a sense of nostalgia, especially considering I haven’t played the source material, Sonic Adventure 2. These final moments of the film also helped me to further appreciate the relationship between Ivo Robotnik and Agent Stone (Lee Majdoub).

Overall I’m extremely satisfied with this installment in a franchise that I hope continues for a long time. This film has boosted my optimism for the upcoming films and series tenfold.
