Five years ago, the first Joker film was released to both critical and commercial acclaim, leading fans of the film to demand a follow-up to the Oscar winner. Now, the first official trailer and second overall has been released for the project, due out this awards season.

The first trailer for the film was released back in April as part of Warner Bros.’ CinemaCon showcase and depicted our first look at a more musical take on the dark and edgy world crafted by director Todd Phillips. Phillips returns for the second film, and his work is again on full display in a second trailer.

The trailer and film star Joaquin Phoenix as the titular Arthur Fleck, who is now joined by accomplice Lee (Lady Gaga), whose name is a play on the iconic Batman villain Harley Quinn. You can now watch the trailer in full, below:

The trailer opens with Arthur Fleck being transported to the courthouse for what is dubbed by an announcer as “The Trial of the Century”. The trailer also gives context on how Lee’s admiration for Arthur developed and teases quite the musical performance between the duo.

Further, the film was confirmed to release In Competition at the Venice Film Festival earlier today. Read more about our festival coverage here.

Joker: Folie à Deux is directed by Todd Phillips and stars Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck/ The Joker, Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, Zazie Beetz as Sophie Dumond, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, Steve Coogan, Ken Leung and Harry Lawtey. The film arrives in theatres on October 4, 2024.
