Mike P. Nelson Set To Direct New ‘Saw’ Film For Atomic Monster

James Wan has set a new director for the latest instalment in his Saw franchise, tapping Wrong Turn‘s Mike P. Nelson to direct the upcoming eleventh film.

Gregory Weidman and Geoff Tock will pen the upcoming film, which is the first since the rights reverted back to franchise visionary James Wan, who created the series in 2004, and has since gone onto mastermind the Conjuring and Insidious franchises. Wan will be producing for Atomic Monster, Jason Blum for Blumhouse Productions, and original writer Leigh Whannell will also produce.

Mike P. Nelson is best known for his work in the horror genre having directed the remake of Wrong Turn, last year’s Silent Night, Deadly Night, and the upcoming giant snake movie Beware Boiúna.

Saw follows the escapades of John Kramer (Tobin Bell), who moonlights as the vigilante Jigsaw, who traps the morally repugnant in puzzles. In order for these people to survive, they must beat the puzzles in which the solution often is maximum pain or injury.

James Wan reiterated his belief in Nelson, pointing out how important a good director is for the franchise.

“Making the original Saw was a defining experience for me, so it was essential to find a director who would honor that world,” Wan said. “Mike has a raw, distinctive filmmaking voice with an inventive approach to the genre, and I believe he’ll bring something truly unique and special to the franchise.”

Nelson has also commented on his involvement, stating “Being asked to play in this twisted sandbox with James is nothing short of a dream come true. Greg and Geoff and James have crafted such a wild script that brings the mystery of the original while exploring new insane bloody ideas that meld so well with the brutal moral compass of the franchise. Let the games begin!”

Saw 11 is directed by Mike P. Nelson and is written by Gregory Weidman and Geoff Tock. Leigh Whannell, Jason Blum, and James Wan produce the film.
