The trailer for the live action adaptation of How To Train Your Dragon will be coming sooner than we thought according to one reliable insider.
A reliable insider, Cryptic4KQual, better known by ‘Cryptic’, revealed on his X (formerly known as Twitter) account that the first full trailer, or teaser, for the live-action adaptation of How To Train Your Dragon will play in front of screening of Wicked, which releases in cinemas on November 22nd. This is a lot sooner than expected but it makes a lot of sense considering Universal has very high hopes for Wicked and is expecting it to reach over a billion at the box office, looking at it to be their Barbie – even spending similar amounts on the marketing as you’ve likely seen: Wicked is everywhere. Therefore, it also makes sense to promote their next big movie, their hopeful summer hit, infront of their biggest movie in a while.
Recently, there has been a lot of talk emerging from test screenings on the quality of the movie currently and how close it is to the original animated movie. Whilst fans may have expected it to take a different and more unique approach by adapting the book more to create some level of difference from the original, it appears that it is going to be an exact retread of the animated version, but in live action. In the original movie, Hiccup (Jay Baruchel in the original trilogy, Mason Thames in the upcoming film) is a Norse teenager from the island of Berk, where fighting dragons is a way of life. His progressive views and weird sense of humor make him a misfit, despite the fact that his father is chief of the clan. Tossed into dragon-fighting school, he endeavors to prove himself as a true Viking, but when he befriends an injured dragon he names Toothless, he has the chance to plot a new course for his people’s future.
Originally, the movie was set to begin shooting in Summer 2023 but was delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA actors strike. Filming officially began on January 15th 2024 in Belfast, Northern Island. Since then, it has had a very quiet production that wrapped on May 16th. Not much is known about the process it took but it is said to have included a lot of practical effects and with the movie retaining the same director as the original, it’s certain that the film is going to look great visually, hopefully utilising the beautiful views of the Irish landscape to transform into Berk.
There is a lot left in the dark surrounding the film and with leads Mason Thames and Nico Parker never having led a movie of this size, it is still to be seen how well the essence of the original can be captured. There is lots to look forward to and now not much longer to wait before we get our first look at the end of the month, which hopefully also releases online soon after showing before Wicked.
How To Train Your Dragon stars Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Gerard Butler, Nick Frost and Julian Dennison. The film is directed by Dean DeBlois and is set to be released on June 13th, 2025 by Dreamworks.
