Kendrick Lamar Starts Filming Untitled Comedy/Musical With ‘South Park’ Co-Creators
From “Like That” to “Not Like Us” to this new film, Kendrick Lamar’s year keeps getting better and better.
Kendrick Lamar is filming the upcoming comedy / musical that South Park co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are directing.
Kendrick is producing the untitled film in conjunction with South Park co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone who are also directing the film set to release in theaters on July 4th, 2025. It’s set at Paramount, and reports indicate it will be a comedic musical.
The movie is currently filming in Pomona, California. A recent TikTok video was shared of filming taking place in the city. Kendrick Lamar is a Compton native which is about 40 miles from Pomona so it makes a lot of sense for them to be filming near the area.
When originally announced in 2022, the film was described as “depicting the past and present coming to a head when a young Black man, who is interning as a slave re-enactor at a living history museum, discovers that his white girlfriend’s ancestors once owned his”
It’s unclear whether Kendrick Lamar will star in the film, but he was apparently present on set. According to Jeff Sneider, Chloe East of The Fabelmans fame is starring in the film as the white girlfriend.
Chloe East stars in Heretic which is set to release later this year from A Quiet Place writers, Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. The film also stars Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher, and Elder Kennedy.
Chloe is also coming off filming At the Sea starring Amy Adams, Murray Bartlett, and Brett Goldstein from Pieces of a Woman director Kornél Mundruczó. It’s a major role for her especially since the character she plays seems to be a massive piece of the puzzle.
Paramount Pictures is producing, and distributing the untitled film. Paramount Pictures CEO Brian Robbins described the script as “one of the funniest and most original scripts we’ve ever read, and it’s certain to create some fireworks when it hits theaters on July 4th, 2025”.
While the musical elements haven’t been defined, it feels likely that Kendrick Lamar will produce new music for the film in some form. Perhaps rap songs are the musical element used to portray the character’s thoughts and feelings ala Blindspotting starring Daveed Diggs.
If Kendrick Lamar does end up starring in this film, it would be his feature acting debut. His only acting credit is on TV. He was in an episode of 50 Cent’s TV show Power as a crackhead.
Kendrick is also rumored to be releasing his next studio album sometime this year. He’s set to headline the half-time performance at Superbowl LIX. He has been dominating the charts with “Not Like Us”, so it’ll be interesting to see if he can take his talent to Hollywood and dominate that too.
