Influencer turned boxer Jake Paul has defeated former heavyweight world champion Mike Tyson in a boxing match, Paul vs Tyson, held Friday night.
By far and large, this year’s staple boxing match came in the form of Netflix’s Jake Paul and Mike Tyson clash, one of the most anticipated boxing matches of the last five years. With heavy marketing in the lead up to the event, as well as preshow matches, Paul vs Tyson will without a doubt be one of the biggest talking points this week.
Earlier this week, at the final and official weigh in before the match, Mike Tyson, known for being the youngest heavyweight champion ever (winning when he was 20) and countless classics such as The Hangover, slapped Paul in the face. It would appear the act of violence was caused when the Disney Channel star stood on Tyson’s foot, leading to many comparisons between this slap and the fabled Academy Award smack between Will Smith and Chris Rock.
Now last night, Paul and Tyson got in the ring for the first time, ready to fight it out. From an audience perspective, it seems many were in favour of the legendary boxer Iron Mike Tyson, with many audience members audibly booing the opponent. In the audience were huge stars such as William Zabka & Ralph Macchio (promoting the final season of Cobra Kai), Shaquille O’Neal, Charlize Theron, Joe Manganiello, Simu Liu, Josh Duhamel, Mr Beast, Talk Tuah’s Hailey Welch and many more.
Tyson (red corner) held his own for the full fight, but managed to put out less than half the punches as Paul (blue corner), with Paul inevitably coming out of the fight as victor, angering a majority of the internet. Many fans criticised Netflix for poor connectivity and buffering streams, due to the high demand for the internet from fans at home, whilst others condemned the service for their involvement in organising a fight between a 28-year-old (Paul) and a 58-year-old far out of his prime (Tyson), with the latter even experiencing medical issues in the last few years and lead up to the fight.
Negative reactions from famed influencers and celebrities were seen on Twitter/X, including thoughts from Ludwig, Freddie Gibbs, Nico Ali Walsh (grandson of legendary Muhammad Ali), and more.
Mike Tyson has expressed that he doesn’t think this will be his last fight, even at such an old age. He’s also expressed interest in fighting Jake Paul’s brother, Logan Paul, an influencer turned wrestler who replied with “Motherfucker, I’d fucking kill you Mike.”
Paul vs Tyson was streamed live by Netflix, a change of pace for the streamer, as was depicted in the poor performance in the streamers software. Congratulations to Jake Paul for the win.
