What is ‘Blade Runner’?

Blade Runner is based on the 1968 novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep” by author Philip K. Dick. The first film, Blade Runner, was helmed by Ridley Scott and released in 1982. The film focuses on Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a “Blade Runner” whose job it is to hunt down bioengineered artificial humans known as replicants. His duty is challenged when he falls in love with a replicant himself and questions his very own existence. The follow-up to this classic came out nearly 35 years later in the form of Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 which follows Officer K (Ryan Gosling), a replicant himself who is working as a Blade Runner, unraveling the mystery of the first natural-born replicant.

Looking to the future

Blade Runner 2099 will seemingly be a continuation of these ideas, taking place 50 years after the previous story. Plot details are light, but it is reported by RPK that Schafer will be playing a character named Cora. Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All At Once) is currently the only cast member for the show to be confirmed by Variety.

Blade Runner 2099 will be executively produced by Ridley Scott.
