Guillermo Del Toro has confirmed today, on his Bluesky, that Frankenstein will be receiving a theatrical release, which is unusual for a Netflix movie.
In an unusual movie for Netflix, it seems that they will be giving Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein a traditional theatrical release. This comes on the heels of months of controversy surrounding Netflix and their straight to streaming strategy, which included Daniel Craig publicly dissing the head of Netflix for not deciding to release Glass Onion in theatres before going to Netflix, wanting to give it a wider release after seeing how the crowd responded to it at earlier screenings.
As well as this, Netflix had just lost out on Emerald Fennell’s next movie, Wuthering Heights, due to the fact that they were unwilling to give it a proper release in cinemas. Despite offering Margot Robbie and her company $150 million for the film, they refused in favour of a theatrical release with Warner Bros, which was clearly a wakeup call for the Netflix executives. It seemed that now creatives were going in favour of the art and wanting to keep cinemas and the movie-going experience alive as opposed to just picking whatever studio could make up the biggest number.
Frankenstein, a long-awaited passion project for director Guillermo Del Toro, has been one of the most anticipated movies of next year following the completion of filming earlier this year. Featuring a star-studded cast that includes Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, and Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein’s monster, the film reimagines Mary Shelley’s iconic novel with del Toro’s signature gothic flair.
Known for his ability to humanise monsters and craft visually stunning worlds, del Toro promises to explore untapped moments from the novel, delving into themes of creation, isolation, and father-son dynamics. Frankenstein could become a definitive adaptation of the classic tale and act as a lesson on how to correctly do adaptations, taking material from the book whilst building on it in a grand and unique way.
Originally set to feature Andrew Garfield as Frankenstein’s monster, scheduling conflicts caused by the writer’s and actor’s strikes led Garfield to exit the project, leaving fans disappointed but still excited to see what could come of the project. His role has now been filled by Jacob Elordi, joining an impressive cast that includes Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Mia Goth.
Netflix reportedly paid over $30 million to secure the project, reflecting its confidence in del Toro’s vision. And now with the news of Frankenstein receiving a theatrical release, it shows that Netflix is fully committed to this movie and must love what del Toro has created. Everyone is very excited to see what he has come up with and now can enjoy the spectacle on a huge screen as intended.
Frankenstein is directed by Guillermo Del Toro and stars Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Christoph Waltz, Mia Goth and Ralph Ineson. The film is produced by Netflix and it is unknown who will be distributing the movie. There is no release date yet, but the movie will be released in 2025.
