Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II is a sequel to his previous Academy Award winner, Gladiator. The film stars Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen, and more. The film revolves around Mescal’s character, Lucius, the former heir to the Roman Empire who becomes a gladiator after his home is invaded by the Roman army. The army is led by General Marcus Acacius (played by Pascal), and the film takes place during the reign of the co-emperors Caracalla and Geta (played by Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger).
The film takes place two decades after the events of the first Gladiator, which follows the journey of Russell Crowe’s character, Maximus, who becomes a gladiator and rises through the ranks of the arena, determined to avenge his family. The sequel was originally announced in 2018 with Mescal landing the role of Lucius in January 2023.
The film also marks a big stepping stone for many of the cast members, specifically Mescal, Quinn, and May Calamawy, who all are newcomers to the film industry. Mescal received critical acclaim for his roles in Normal People and Aftersun, meanwhile Quinn for his role as Eddie in Stranger Things, and Calamawy for her role as Layla in Marvel Studios’ Moon Knight.
How Long Is ‘Gladiator II’?
We can exclusively reveal that the film has a final runtime of 2 hours and 21 mins, which is 14 minutes shorter than the theatrical version of the first film. Furthermore, it’s likely that the plot of Gladiator II will also be less chunkier than that of the first film, due to the shorter runtime, considering that the first Gladiator had an extended version which was 2 hours and 50 minutes long. Perhaps Ridley Scott will release a director’s cut for the upcoming movie, similar to his most recent film, Napoleon.
