First ‘Superman’ Trailer: Things Are Looking Up

With seven months until the new DCU makes its theatrical debut with Superman, we have our first look at the film in the form of a teaser trailer.

First 'Superman' Trailer: Things Are Looking Up

The first Superman trailer is here, but before that, here is a quick history on the film. Talks regarding a new Superman film were discussed in the “Chapter 1 – Gods and Monsters” video uploaded on January 31st, 2023. In this video James Gunn talked about the slate for the first few years of the new DC universe simply known as the DCU. Superman: Legacy was part of that slate and was described as “The true start of the DCU”, written and later confirmed to be directed by James Gunn himself.

The film takes inspiration from the All-Star Superman comic run written by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely. Casting for the roles of  Clark Kent and Lois Lane proved to be a tough battle, as each role had three actors in the running. The role of Superman had David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult and Tom Brittney while the role of Lois Lane had Rachel Brosnahan, Emma Mackey and Phoebe Dynevor. Eventually David Corenswet would land the role of Clark Kent while Rachel Brosnahan landed the role of Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult would still end up receiving a role in the film as the antagonist, Lex Luthor.

The film was renamed to Superman in February 2024 when filming in Norway began. Filming lasted until July 2024 and included locations such as Trilith Studios in Atlanta with additional on-location filming around Georgia and Ohio.

Prior to the release of the trailer, fans first saw a look at Superman’s crest in a post by James Gunn on February 29th. We would later see a battleworn Superman getting rather late to take on his next foe on May 6th. On July 11th, we got a better look at the crest in celebration of the film being one year away from release. Finally, we got our first look at Krypto The Superdog as seen in a post on October 15th which saw Superman and Krypto observing Earth while sitting on the moon. Today, the teaser trailer has been released. You can view the trailer below:

A poster was also released Monday which shows the Man of Steel ascending with the tagline: “Look Up”. You can view the poster below:

What Happens In The First Superman Trailer?

The trailer opens with Superman (David Corenswet) crashing into the icy landscape of the Artic, presumably near The Fortress of Solitude. Superman whistles for his canine companion, Krypto, who he tells to “take [him] home.” We get many shots of Clark Kent and his reporter friends in the Daily Planet building. Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) and Clark share a kiss, and Superman fights a kaiju.

Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor readies a gun and looks filled with contempt. Superman gets a can thrown at him by an angry mob as we get our first looks at Guy Gardner, Hawk Girl, Metamorpho, and Mr. Terrific. The trailer ends with Superman and Lois embracing as a threat is glowing over Metropolis.
