What is Fallout?

Fallout is an upcoming TV show created and produced by the husband-and-wife duo of Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. It is based on the post-apocalyptic role-playing video game of the same name. The franchise includes four installments and a spin-off. A fifth game is currently in development.

The original Fallout video game was set on a retro futuristic Earth that was devastated by an all-out nuclear war in 2077. Fallout and its subsequent sequels were set in the 22nd and 23rd centuries, depicting the fallout of this war known as the Great War.

Fallout, the series, is an amalgamation of all the games rather than being a 1:1 adaptation. The series is set 200 years after the Great War. The show will feature a completely new set of characters original to the series.

Amazon describes the show: “The series is based on the popular video game Fallout, which is set 200 years after the apocalypse. The story follows a community of people living in luxury fallout shelters who are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind—and they’re shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird, and highly violent universe waiting for them.”.

The main cast is led by Lucy (Ella Purnell), an optimistic vault dweller whose idealistic nature is tested throughout the series. Walton Goggins plays a bounty hunter known as “The Ghoul,” while Aaron Moten plays a soldier who serves in a military faction called the Brotherhood of Steel. Overseer Hank (Kyle MacLachlan) is Lucy’s father, who shares her passion for making the world a better place.

Jonathan Nolan, the creator of the show, has an incredible resume. Jonathan and his Oscar-winning brother, Christopher Nolan, wrote Memento, The Prestige, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, and Interstellar together. He also created HBO’s super hit Westworld, which was also a dystopian science fiction futuristic tale.

Will Fallout Be An Anthology?

All the Fallout games feature an anthology cast, so each game has a different set of characters with a different journey in the same universe. The show is following suit, as season 1 will do the same as it introduces new characters to follow. So will a potential season 2 do the same?

In an exclusive article with Screenrant, showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner said, “I just love that each game introduces you to a new world and you encounter different factions as part of going to a new place. But we are very attached to our characters.”.

They didn’t quite reveal the answer, but there may be hope for either side depending on the reception of the show and the characters in the show. Stranger Things, for example, was originally conceived as a miniseries. This changed when the characters became too popular to not do more with.

Fallout stars Ella Purnell as “Lucy,”  Aaron Moten as “Maximus,”  Walton Goggins as “The Ghoul,”  and Kyle MacLachlan as “Overseer Hank.” The series also stars Moisés Arias, Sarita Choudhury, Michael Emerson, Leslie Uggams, Frances Turner, Dave Register, Zach Cherry, and many more.

The series will be streaming on Amazon Prime Video on April 11, 2024. All 8 episodes will be released on the same day. You can watch the trailer right now, below:
