Talks of a Minecraft film began over a decade ago, in February 2014. At the time, Roy Lee and Jill Messick were set to be producers. Years later, in April 2022, Jared Hess became the new director, and Jason Momoa was set to star in the film. Additional castings ran from May 2023 to January 2024 and included names such as Jack Black, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, Jennifer Coolidge, and more. Filming was conducted between January 2024 and mid-April 2024 in New Zealand.

The first trailer was released on September 4th, 2024, introducing us to our main characters, Garrett (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Eugene Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers), Dawn (Danielle Brooks), and Steve (Jack Black). We also got first looks at some of the mobs from the game, including the Sheep, Piglin, Ghast, Wolf, Creeper, and Llama.

Later that month, during Minecraft Live 2024, we were shown a behind-the-scenes look at the film, which also included our first clip. In the clip, Steve teaches Garrett and Henry how to craft. Steve demonstrates by creating a sword, followed by Garrett creating two buckets that are attached to each other by a chain.

Yesterday, we got an additional behind-the-scenes look, where the cast talked about their experiences with the film as well as the Minecraft YouTubers who visited the set. Today, the official trailer has been released, giving us more details on the story. You can view the trails below:

We also received a new trailer which shows the Bee. You can view the poster below:

The trailer opens with a clapboard, and a faceless voice says, “Minecraft trailer, take two,” as a Bee bumps into the camera. We see a young Steve looking at the entrance to a mineshaft with a sign forbidding children from entering. We hear the words “I am Steve” playing in the background. A close-up of young Steve follows as Steve continues, “as a child, I yearned for the mines. But something always got in the way”. We see an old man yelling at Steve, “Go on, get out of here!” Steve runs away. We then see a crafting sequence of the Warner Bros, Legendary Entertainment, and Mojang logo.

We return to the entrance of the mine, where Steve says, “But the call of the mines was too strong,” followed by a shot of an older Steve. “So one day, I started digging, and digging, until I found… This” is said as Steve enters the mine and finds a mysterious blue cube. The portal from the teaser trailer is then shown. We see Steve enter the Minecraft overworld. He continues to narrate, “A wonderland where anything you can imagine is possible.” A Bee flies by Steve. He looks surprised. “As long as what you imagine can be built out of blocks.” We see Steve pointing his fingers, and blocks appear. He tries to tame a wolf and is successful, as shown by the hearts appearing.

“This April” appears on the screen. We then see Henry emerge from the portal along with Garrett, Natalie, and Dawn. Garrett asks, “Where are we?” Dawn asks, “Wait, who are you again?”. Garrett responds, “Garrett the garbage man garrison, gamer of the year 1989.. Whatever, I barely think about it”. We cut to a shot of a village. Steve says, “welcome to the overworld,” followed by a shot of Steve and Henry standing in front of a cave opened by Redstone, followed by a Redstone-powered track. At the village, we see Steve activate a cooked chicken farm, followed by a shot of the cooked chicken. Natalie says, “This place makes no sense.” Steve responds, “Don’t I know it.”

We see an army of Piglins carried by Ghasts attacking a moment, “There are dark forces who want to destroy this world,” said Steve as we see a shot of the Nether followed by an army of Piglins at the village. Steve further says, “If we want to stop them, we’ll have to create something amazing,” while Garrett digs a hole and Henry punches a tree. Steve carries the crew to his stash, where we see various Minecraft items such as diamond armor, fireworks, and TNT. We see Henry flying with elytra wings before cutting to Steve, making an iron sword. We see Steve attacking a zombie with their own arm, followed by a shot of an Iron Golem at the village. Garrett jumps off the edge of the village to escape something, likely the Piglin army. We cut to a scene where Garrett picks up an Ender Pearl. Steve says, “It teleports you to wherever you throw it.”

Garrett, in doubt, says, “Yeah, right,” then throws it anyways and gets teleported. When Garrett becomes scared, Steve says, “And.. that was the only one I had, no biggie”. The logo for the film appears. We cut back to the film, where Steve says, “Oh yeah, there’s one more thing to know.” the sky turns to night, and we see a wolf howl. Natalie says, “Great, now it’s dark.” Dawn says, “Does that feel quick to anyone else?”. The group is then attacked by Zombies and a Skeleton carrying an enchanted bow.

The synopsis is as follows:

Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival!  Four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Brooks)—find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination.  To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black).  Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.
