Following the success of 2023’s Megan, it seems like Blumhouse can’t get enough of AI! The production company has already greenlit a sequel, MEGAN 2.0, to release in theaters June 25, 2025. Additionally, a spinoff movie called SOULM8TE has been announced, set to release in theaters on January 2, 2026. Kate Dolan has been attached to direct the film.
For this year, Blumhouse will be giving us our annual dose of Artificial Intelligence horror with Afraid (stylized AfrAId). Starring John Cho and Katherine Waterston, the story will revolve around an AI smart home device named AIA (pronounced EYE-YA), which, in a similar beat to MEGAN, becomes increasingly attached to the host family.
The movie, originally titled They Listen, is written and directed by Chris Weitz, director of American Pie, The Golden Compass, and The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Weitz is also a credited writer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Pinocchio (2022), and The Creator. Afraid also stars Havana Rose Liu, David Dastmalchian, Keith Carradine, Lukita Maxwell, and Riki Lindhome.
What is Afraid’s Runtime?
We can exclusively reveal that the runtime of Afraid will be 1 hour and 24 minutes long. Tickets for the 84-minute movie will go on sale Wednesday, August 14 at 6am PT/9am ET. You can watch the trailer below:
